In a crisis, it becomes clear what it means to lead a political community well. The nationwide celebration on August 1 showed this. In contrast to the hectic rush and cancellations at other locations, Zug decided early on for a decentralized solution: small neighborhood concerts were held at 45 locations throughout the city. Different music styles throughout the city and the neighborhoods, a joy for everyone.
A beautiful location by the lake, the attractive local recreation area on the Zugerberg, and a city administration that sees itself as a service provider for the citizen. Besides, there are cycle paths, many places where everyone has direct and free access to the lake, and a suitable leisure offer with the old town, restaurants, art gallery, casino, and other cultural and leisure facilities.
Taxes are low and, thanks to some high additional tax income, the company still generates a surplus of revenue. To support the heavily affected retail trade in the current crisis, the city has given each citizen a voucher of CHF 100. A campaign that will lead to some CHF 3 million additional sales in the retail trade. The Corona Fund, which provided with CHF 10 million, also allows direct support where it is needed. For example, at the house of arts, which had run into financial difficulties due to the shutdown.
Mayor Karl Kobelt puts it this way: "In extraordinary times, we have to act counter-cyclically. We try to support the economy by keeping construction activity high, triggering payments early on to maintain liquidity, and trying to push ahead with investments instead of putting them on hold".
